Owning a home comes with a great sense of pride, security and accomplishment. However, there are just as many great reasons to rent until you’re ready to take the leap into home ownership.
Maintenance. A homeowner is responsible for the upkeep on their homes. Water damage, tree trimming, even snow removal are all things a landlord or property manager can take care of when you’re a tenant.
Debt. A home comes with a big bill, likely in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you’re not ready to tackle a mortgage renting is the way to go.
Taxes. A renter won’t owe any taxes or home owners dues on their living space. So no surprise increases or fees.
Utilities. Often utilities are paid with a rental home or apartment. The laws vary from state to state but they may either be paid by the homeowner or rolled into your rent at which point you’ll have a level payment and aren’t subject to spikes due to bad weather.
Freedom. When you sign a lease chances are it will be for 6 months or a year which means a much shorter commitment than buying a home. If you’re on the fast track at work with the possibility of relocation or perhaps the opposite, close to retirement and planning to hit the links in Costa Rica, renting means you’re more nimble, just turn over the keys and head out.
Flexibility. If you’re moving to a new city renting is a great option until you get the lay of the land. It’s a particularly good idea if you aren’t familiar with the different neighborhoods or school districts, or are relocating alone until joined by your family at a later date.
